Pick A Project with Michelle Workman
This week’s Pick A Project is the gorgeous New York Meets Midwest by Corey Damen Jenkins.
You can see in this project that Corey has a rare ability to layer patterns without over burdening the eye.
Corey’s style has been described as a fresh continental mix of elegance and modernity, while his vision is fueled by his clients. Corey formed Design With Vision in 2009. In the past five years, his unique talent has already attracted the likes of HGTV, where he won the reality competition Showhouse Showdown.
To get a better idea of Corey as a designer, I asked him five questions:
Whats your favorite thing about your New York Meets Midwest project?
-My favorite thing about that project was the judicious usages of bold patterns and color. We used so many geometric patterns in varying scales and that lemon-colored sofa was totally bombastic—but it was necessary.
What’s your favorite period?
-I love the architecture and design of the Italian Renaissance Revival era.
Which up-and-coming designer would you like to mentor?
-It would be an honor to mentor youth in the inner cities who dream of being interior designers, architects and artists. A lot of these kids don’t have positive role models in their communities. Therefore, they never envision themselves rising above the streets, the statistics and the stereotypes. The real tragedy is so many of these teens have incredibly gifted minds for creativity—they just need to be properly stimulated, encouraged and inspired to unlock those talents. I want to be a part of that.
If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would it be?
-I’d give pretty much anything to have one more dinner with my maternal Grandmother. I miss her guidance and soothing words of encouragement. She passed shortly before I launched my design firm and I deeply regret that I never got to tell her that I reached my professional goal.
In your opinion, what’s in with design and what’s out?
-I think we can stick a fork in beige and greige rooms. Color—especially jewel tones—is where it’s at. And brass is everything now: be guilty for gilt.

I couldn’t agree more with Corey. As the iconic Dorothy Draper once said, “The Drab Age is over. Color is coming into its own again.“
